YOu should be able to run the CF either way. What will matter is if your CF is incorporated into your room ventilation or not

well, i agree that it wouldn't work as well, anyway.

they're not designed to work that way, and you would cut down the efficiency by a lot. (smaller surface area inside vs out) not to mention it's got to be tough getting a prefilter in there, and i wouldn't run mine w/out one.

and while i'm not sure why, it seems like it would create an extra drag on the fan.. cutting your fan life.

btw.. i like eco-plus filters.. from what i remember, they use more carbon than all but one maker, and they're cheaper than almost any of them.

I bought some carbon from a carbon company I found on the web. It cost $1.10 per lb in 50 lb containers. Sales guy said it's a bit more than a 5 gallon bucket full.

I plan to recycle it by cooking it in my glass oven after it gets worn. You could probably cook it clean in a regular self cleaning oven, but the guy warned about possible nasty/toxic fumes....Considering we know the exact type of danky/skanky that it absorbed I'd say we could probably throw a big "Carbon Cleaning Party" and not even need to roll any phattys!! Just kidding of course don't try this at home, I've been know to be wrong.....more than once!

For those who have had to send back their filter to be recharged, sometimes packaging can be a hassle
any postman/ courier who's savvy is going to figure out what you are sending in a couple of Trash Bags ( Bin Liners ) wrapped with duct tape

Hi Folks,

Why do I have to toss my Can 200 Filter when she's done? Can I not just drill out a few holes in the bottom of the can to let out the old carbon and replace it with fresh stuff, then just wash the filter? Seems odd to me to have to dispose of it or send back to the manufactuer for a recharge...when activated carbon is so readily available in my area, and I have a BIG drill and all??? Am I missing something about the recharge process?

Dman....most often at least one if not both ends are pop riveted to the main chamber. Using your drill to get rid of them is the easiest way to DIY refill your unit with fresh carbon.

On the subject of Carbon Filters ( CAN, in particular )

i am just reading the latest catalogue from "My favourite Grow Shop" and noticed something new mentioned in the Carbon Filter Refilling Centre !
which somewhat confuses me
it confuses my previous post about the lifespan of a CAN filter (18 months)
i'll quote what it says;
" Instead of discarding your old carbon filters every 12 months , why not bring them down to us t, and let us refil them for you.
Every refilled filter comes with a new fabric sleeve and is refilled with 'original Quality' charcoal."
Budget filters are non refillable
Maximum CAN refills = Twice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????
I never knew they only refilled them a maximum amount of times, and am a little "miffed" that the same catalogue quotes both 18 months , and 12 months , for the very same item
also , i cannot see it being a mistype, as it clearly promotes the longetivity of the filter before one was to purchase it
and also reduces the claimed lifespan by six months to increase refilling revenue

Hi Folks,

Upon closer inspection of my Can 200 filter, the top/bottom are only held on by 3 screws on the sides of the flanges (no pop rivets). This makes removal/and re-filling of carbon as simple as #2 square head screw-driver...awesome!

Joe, besides price, what defines a "budget" filter to you?

the quality of the carbon? from what i can tell, they both use the same carbon. (the Can-Filter and the Eco Plus Carbonaire)
the amount of carbon used? they both use almost the exact same amounts.
how long they last? they're both advertised to last the same amount of time.
the gauge of the steel used? i couldn't find that out, but the overall weight on comprably sized units weigh almost the same. first hand; the carbonaire is built like a tank.

the only differnce i could find is the price. speaking for myself, someone on a budget, that makes a big difference.

theoretically speaking, would'nt the used one weigh more than the unused fresh carbon ?

now i have read a CAN ( mine has pop rivets ???? )680 model is only good for two refills, i am really thinking of the budget option, as both reccomend filling after 12 months
whilst a brand new CAN is adverised by this same link as lasting 18 months

Those things look pretty simple. I can't imagine it would be difficult to refill one. Actually looks like it would be pretty simple to make the whole thing with screen and that rabbit cage wire. The carbon isn't expensive.
