I recommend SolarMAX the 1000w veg conversion bulb and the 1000w HPS Super for flowering
you can use a 1000w HPS ballast for both bulbs

"In the uptake of nutrients from the soil food web, sulphur is the catalyst for carbon chemistry, boron gives us sap pressure and silicon builds the capillary action that transports plant sap. Only then can calcium, magnesium and amino acids be delivered to cell division sites for chlorophyll manufacture. As chlorophyll catches light, phosphorous transfers energy into sugar production—after which a mix of sugars and more complex products follow potassium through the silica pathways to provide energy or its storage wherever required in the plant."

true enough

I'm going to answer anyways

a ballast is needed to power the bulbs

you will need 2 bulbs
a metal halide (MH) bulb for vegetative growth (a blue spectrum bulb that simulates spring and summer sun colours)
a high pressure sodium (hps) bulb for flowering (a red spectrum bulb that simulates fall sun colour)

if you are asking where is a good place to buy one, I don't know because I buy equipment at a local shop...but if you do a search on the net for SolarMAX 1000w you should get some results

do you have any experience growing plants indoors?

C-Ray is dead on.
You could also use a bulb like Hortilux or Sun Master, with enhanced spectrum for all phases of growth. A little less specialized than 2 bulbs but does the job quite fine.

actually I was suggesting he get 2 bulbs, an hps and a veg conversion bulb
but I agree with what you are saying

* stay away from the 2-in-one bulbs, the ones that have a 600w hps and 400w mh in the same bulb...they are crap

i know bro, i was just saying that a hortilux is not as good as using two different bulbs, but that it could provide great results as well.

I use 400w regular Metal Halide bulbs and 400w regular HPS bulbs - 2ea. total 800w in a 5x5 enclosure. Cheap, available at the local lighting supply, and they have worked well for quite a few years.

I made my own ballests from kits, also available locally.
