There's 2 I really like. One is called Bloody Butcher, thery're not big but are excellent quartered into salads, hold together well and meaty and flavorable inside. The other is Beefsteak, I just love to cut a couple slices of tomatoe that cover a whole sandwhich.

Look for a variety called "Pineapple". Super sweet, firm flesh and they look like pineapple slices when sliced. Also "Sweet 100" is a great cherry tomato variety.

damn I grew tomatoes for like 20 years and still grow the same old hybrids that will resist every disease known to man, but usually lack in flavor... Celebrity VFFNTXX whatever comees to mind! Brandywine is sounding pretty good!

Oh shit!!!! CRAY has black krim as well!!! This is one of the most unique varieties I have ever seen. It suffers from very very thin flesh and is prone to zipper cracks and doesn't transport well. Iam hybridizing it this year with a few other varieties to see if I can make it more friendly to commercial growing. I will update my progress and Cray if you like I could send you some seeds from the F1's this year so you could grow a few out next season.

oh yeah, watch for a chezch variety called stupice....very early and productive

any with disease resistance that are also flavorful? All I've run into is either flavorful varieties that yield like shit because they die of diseases before they can produce much, or those that are resistant to everything known to man but taste like cardboard. Heirloom varieties are great but disease resistance is not usually their strong suit..... unless you know something I don't and can recomend something. I mean I have had decent tasting hybrid disease resistant varieties before, but nothing really outstanding. OK THANKS

Black Brandywine was excellent last year, and have another growing this year in a pot.I tried a Red Brandywine last year and it stunk,I'll try the Suddith strain next year.(I already have the seed).
I'm also growing Cherokee Purple,Arkansas Traveler, and a Green Grape..The Cherokee Purple is very vigorous, and am looking forward to trying the Green Grape. It turns an interesting shade of green/gold when ripe...

Burpee's Salsa. So Yummy and I believe derived form landrace Central and South American seed stock. The variety is incredibly stable and i can't wait to grow out F2 and F3 stock.

There is no shortage of seed purveyors for heirloom seeds.Try a google search and you'll find quite a few.I have had good success with: http://www.heirloomseeds.com/ myself, and they have a good selection of vegetable seed and flower seed as well.

mb dumb question, but what's Bx?
Wavels
08-15-2006, 03:51 AM
Hey ST, the BX is a designation denoting the type of blend in the Pro Mix
If you look at this link you will see all of the other blends they have.
BX is their general purpose.
Here is what's in BX:

THANKS for the link Wavels!
This is at least as good as Fox Farms right? that seems quite expensive, whereas I believe I can get Pro-Mix from a local greenhouse supply wholesaler, although maybe I have to buy a whole pallet and that would take quite a while for me to use! WELL I will check it out, and looking forward to growing some of those tasty tomatoes next year. I have several varieties this year and can't remember one offhand. :)

There really is nothing quite as good as a vine ripened tomato from the garden no matter what the variety. The flavour is so sweet and the sugar content so high. One taste of a vine ripened garden tomato compared to the store bought varieties ought to convince anyone of the merits of grow your own tomatoes.

Burpee's Salsa Tomatoes are really something special. They are granted, F1 Hybrid seeds and do not fit into the heirloom category. None the less, the fruits are flavourful, make great salsa and bruschetta and the plants themselves are gorgeous. The plants are so uniform and vigorous. No one has ever disclosed the parental origins of these plants. My own supposition is that the parental seed stock came from rural central America where Salsa and Chimol are essentials. Lovely plants and wonderful genetics.

my black krim were not as advertised, they are taking forever I haven't even got one tomato yet but when they come there will be craploads, they are reasonably resistant to blight, 1 out of 4 plants have shown blight subseptibility, I'll save some seeds from the best plants but probably won't grown them again anytime soon not here at least unless the taste blows me away

My Black Pear and Champions are the only ones yielding any fruit so far this year. The heirlooms had very few blossoms.
Anyone notice a decline in production this year?
GG
Space Toker
08-24-2006, 04:43 AM
well production seems just fine here, but that seems like it will soon change as the leaves seem to yellow and dry out, I swear if there is a disease it finds by place and I practice 4 year crop rotation and all... I can't understand it unless it is some sinister govt plot to screw with me! :)
But I will have a bushel more at least before any disease takes hold, so they can bite me! :D
Is it government-spread fusarium after all?
That would explain all thme planes, spreading disease to sabotage us all!
HAHAHAHa
yES THAT was just humor although I would not rule it all out either! PEACE

the black krim was super delicious so maybe I will grow them again this year, and keep selecting for blight resistance
I met a cool old guy in my travels who told me about a legendary tomato from lebanon called "Omar's Lebanese", going to try and find some of those for this year
here's a good forum all about the 'maters

so many tomatos, so little time.
new favorite: early orange, large fleshy oxheart-style that i eat like apples
tried emma's early pink last year, too.
cherries are my alltime favs. especially sweet million or yellow pear.
black cherokee goes a long time to develop full flavor/color, so be patient.
p.s.
seeds of change catalog just came out.... good source for organic/heirloom etc...

I may have mentioned this one before...stupice from terra edibles. Its a early chezch variety that produces tons of small 4oz fruit, very sweet.
I just scooped about a hundred seeds from my chili that I was making last night from these tomatoes frozen. So there is my row for this year....saved about 2$!!!
happy planting!
