Not only do plants need more light when flowering as compared to vegetative growth to get maximum growth in their respective stages, but some strains of MJ (Sativa's in particular) respond well to an increases in intensity.
This can be achieved by moving a plant closer to a bulb, or getting a new bulb, or even bigger bulbs (ie; 400 to 1000),
BUT,
plants show their greatest response (I have tested this) to increased light intensity when they have never as a strain seen that kind of intense light.
By this I mean specifically:
Start a new strain from seed, grow, veg, and keep it (the mothers) under a fluorescent light setup, or a low wattage HID (70 watt), or far away from a bulb (5+') it's whole life.
When you make cuttings also use a fluorescent.
Grow them to health under a fluorescent.
Only when you trigger them, or the 1 to 2 week veg 'in their final home' that most growers do, under HID lighting. As I stated earlier, a plant will have a smaller root mass in relation to it's 'above-soil' mass when grown under fluorescents, and this MAJOR increase in intensity/spectrum most often leads to the plant responding by quickly developing a sufficient root mass to keep up with the increased transpiration [this also creates a little bit of (the good kind) of stress that MJ uses to produce better crystal], and putting the plant's metabolism into overdrive in this attempt as well, resulting in quicker/more efficient/more responsive/better yielding/more potent plants.
A good grower can compound this by manipulating the watering cycles.
I trigger my plants in coincidence with a time when they dry in 2 days from soaking. By the end of flowering they are dry every day, thus making for good uptake of nutrients, and making flushing the plant so easy you'll forget what chem residue tastes like (or organic residue).
I get at least 14 wet/dry cycles in my flush (14 days), my ash is WHITE, and I use 50/50 chemical/organic nutrients (chemical nutrients have been proven to flush BETTER from plants).
Actually my ash is often white after 7 days of flush, as I have been known to be desperate and cut down buds when a week early (all the time actually). hahahahaha
Just my 2 cents worth, as Hunter would say (Fred Dryer), 'Works for me'.
