I'm going to use vision's "bear resistant" soil mix and I'm trying to figure out how much I need.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a one pound plant finishing at the end of September, will fully flush out as well.
We usually use 1 compressed bale (4cuFt) of Sunsine mix #7 (with water crystals)
3 lb Canola Meal
1 lb Feather meal
2 lb High P Bat guano
1 lb Greensand
2 lb Dolomite lime
1 lb Kelp meal.
If you usually grow Half or quarter pound plants ,just divide mix into 2 or 4 as needed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm going to shoot for 1/4 pound plants in 10 gallon bags so divide mix by 4.
I'm going to get topsoil from a greenhouse instead of the sunshine #7 so I figure 1 bail is about three 10 gallon plants. So for every three 10 gallon plants I'll need:
3/4 lb Canola Meal
1/4 lb Feather meal
1/2 lb High P Bat guano
1/4 lb Greensand
1/2 lb Dolomite lime
1/4 lb Kelp meal
Just add water. Sound right?

One bale is 40 Gals/4 quarter pound plants,so divide my orig mix by 4 not 3.
Use 3 parts topsoil and one part perlite if you can.
Mix now and water, add plants on June 1st with a few inches of untreated soil mix around the outside to buffer the roots before they hit the hot mix, OK Slarty?

I'm not going to get this mixed and ready more than a week or so in advance of putting them out. Will it be much of a problem? What about if you have to mix and plant at the same time?

Just buffer them,Slarty,You'll be fine. And water well in the first month. You'll see how they react......stunt......then EXPLODE!

You got it.:farm:
I like the addition of Rice Hulls. They keep the mix well aerated on does not compact down. Also they break down over time to great organic matter in your compost.

I can't find feather meal anywhere. What is a good substitute?
Hi Slarty,
Do you have a feed mill or farm supply store close by? That's where I picked up my alfalfa pellets, kelp, and feather meal. ;)

I've called every nursery and a few feed shops with no luck. There are still a couple places that sell feed to try tomorrow so we shall see.
It's funny though, every feed store I call keeps telling me there is no nutritional value in feather meal and I shouldn't feed it to my heard.:whistling:

Thanks c-ray, I'll find one of them.
Hi Slarty,
Then they have no idea what they are talkng about. I used to work in 2 different feed mills in my younger days. Feather meal went into almost everything...cattle/horse/pig/chicken/turkey, and even some fox and mink feeds we made. I think most cattle farmers are using it as a top-dressing these days. ;) It's funny though, every feed store I call keeps telling me there is no nutritional value in feather meal and I shouldn't feed it to my heard.:whistling:

well guys turns out the bear proof mix isn't so bear proof on eastern bears. Went out this weekend and half of my bags were dumped and torn by stupid bears!! AArrgg... oh well some plants got less dirt than others...

That's why I called it "bear resistant", there isn't anything that's bear proof. That sucks Hillbilly, I have more trouble with deer usually.
