Nicotiana (flowering tobacco) is one of my favorite plants to grow.
The pics above are of my first attempt in a container...it's in only 2-gallon pot with two cosmos. The tobacco is just starting to flower. Some of these plants get to over eight feet tall in my in ground gardens. This container plant looks like it might get that big!!!

Hi caddis,
Cool photo!
Morning Glory I've grown a few times, I like the Mexi hats.... gotta try them!
Yes, all of these plants I started from seed. For some reason I prefer the whole process of watching the little seeds develop! IMO, it's more fun starting your own plants. I only grow tomatoes and cilantro and sage besides the flowers. For some strange reason, the past few years I've preferred different flowers. Use to be that I only grew veggies and herbs...now I love flowers!
I have to try hollyhocks next season.... do you have a favorite strain?
Maybe I'm morphing into a homo? hahahaha

Ya mon! Same feelings, I started gardening when I popped my first seed. Been hooked ever since. I built a three level rolling seed starting/vegging cart which holds 6 4' shop lights my first year. Now giving a go of making a living at it. :tooth:
GreenS, Do you start new Datura every spring? Or are these old plants? I used to have a stellar creme colored one, flowered from april through oct. Was a very strongly perfumed plant once the sun set. Bum a camera.

so i asked the wife if there were ants on the peonies. She said of course, they open the flowers up!! news to me..lets have a look shall we?..
Ants on Peonies
Q) I was visiting a friend today who has many varieties. The buds were
covered with ants. She commented that she needed to spray them with an
insecticide. I thought I had read that ants were beneficial to the peonies.
Is that correct and if so, just how do they help?
A) Do not try to get rid of the ants on your peonies. This is a natural and temporary activity. It is believed that peonies produce small amounts of nectar and other ant attractants to encourage ants to help in opening the dense double flower buds found in many peonies. The ants may be found covering certain varieties and avoiding others, this is totally normal.
Once the buds have opened the ants will disappear - also normal.
Some people think ants are REQUIRED to open the flowers, but this does not to appear to be true.
It seems a debatable question whether ants are beneficial or harmful. I think they are neutral.
Should you spray a pesticide to get rid of the ants? That is a definite no. Since the ants are not harmful and some pesticide residues are harmful, why endanger yourself, the plants or the peony's pollinator (good insects) with poisonous sprays?
Just don't spray.
Instead just enjoy the unique interaction of ants and peonies; an evolutionary effect thousands of years in the making and posing no problems in the long run.
http://www.peonies.org/faq0.html
so she's right again, the peonies make nectar to attract ants to pull open the flowers to retrieve more nectar. Miraculous and Amazing:farm:

TFS, don't have any  anymore:( but when i was growing up we had a good size patch of  's. They are a truly amazing plant tree thing.. one good chop of a machete and you could cut right through the soft trunk of the biggest banana trees. The variety is very astounding as well..,my absolute favorite banana being the plantain, the one you would never pick at the store, as it never appears ripe, lol..goes green to black:s. Not a sweet or eatable banana in the raw form imo, but cut into slices and deep fried and salted..and it floors any spud chip..lol. I just luv to see them. The leaves are these huge beautiful solar factories. I also recall the gardener used to tear the leaves from the outside to middle on a few spots on each big leaf. I wondered why he would wreck such nice foliage like that and he replied this allowed the leaf to bend at better angles to catch more :sun:
GS..if you look in my alley you can find a tap for that sink;)

my lipstick plant had red fuzzy flowers and looked just like that . One way of telling is they are way-way fragrant when flowering..some folks complain the odour gives them a headache. Your plant looks wonderful, isnt it amazing how the runners can go out forever? Mine could probably wrap its arms around the room and is half the size of yours. All your plants look great of course, as would have the orca bean before the bugs got her. Thanx to all those who make it a greener world indoors and out:farm:

well, suflowers are about finished here..have to remember to keep a seed head for next year. They were started early indoor this spring btw. The tomatoes were the same plants that i had in my secret garden. I cut back most of the foilage, then when they recoverd some i transfered them outside. I tried to plant different types of tomato plants together to observe differences, and for fun. The last shot is one of wifeys lil creations that sits on the deck and smiles all day.

I was super negligent in planting my garlic this year, but I was saved in that I missed a couple of bulbs when I harvested. I dug them out in February when they had long green tops coming out of each clove and split up the bulbs and then replanted them.

here's 3 types of tobacco
1st one is Del Gold a commercial variety from Richter's
2nd one I call hippy tobacco because it came from some hippies
3rd one is the 1000 year old tobacco (rustica) from Salt Spring Seeds
some of this will be for offerings and ceremonial purposes as I am not a smoker per se but I like to grow the plant, it has pretty flowers like the daturas...I think I may jar up some of the Del Gold and pass it around to some smoking friends at x-mas time perhaps

Question for garden people. Last year I grew the funniest carrots from some seed C-ray gave me. I only used 2 bags of dirt for my patch and apparently the carrots thought it wasn't deep enough cuz they all grew like little golfballs. So I have had these in a ziplock in a fridge since the fall. Dog loves 'em, every once in a while I give her one. Now I went in today and theres only a few left. But they are growing new stems and roots. Soooo what would happen if I planted one of them ? Yard fungus. Peace GS
I am planting my first vege garden and was wondering if i put down landscape fabric (black) if it will heat the roots too much after they sprout? I have some flats that i picked up at the greenhouse that will get planted as well.
Plan is to cut holes in the fabric and plant. the fabric allows water to pass thorugh but blocks the weeds from coming up. The area was previously grass and weeds and was roto-tilled last weekend. got out most of the grass clumps but there are still alot in there.
Thanks for you help.
