I personally moved to a state where I knew absolutely no one except the realtor. I kept contact with "neighbors" to an absolute minimum. I am trying currently to acquire an ADT protection yard sign without paying the horrendous fees associated with them. I live in extremely rural tenn and with my being on SSDI I chose not to get a pooch(I don't want to have to choose between food for a dog or me). I do see many barred windows in the big cities. IMO the major error is making local friends and letting them know you smoke or worse yet grow.

In canada things are a bit different yet the same.

I am a good neighbor and i talk to them all the time, i know their names and they know mine. this makes me (and them) feel more comfortable with each other and our surroundings. I live between seniors and a single mother (I've helped her son fix his dirt bike numerous times). Between the 2 of them i talk to the seniors a bit more frequently as they always like to see my dog and give her treats.

Now barred windows may be more common in the states, not so here. However when i bought the house the workshop had bars on the windows and a barred door in front of the actual door. I chose to keep these in place as thats where i was flowering plants. I dont plan on taking the barred door (or windows) wiht me when we go this summer. A good steel security door looks less like you have something to hide. A friend of mine used a mag lock on his door to his garage, pretty stealth security and pretty impossible to open.

camera and recorder are only really useful in tracking down the guy you caught on tape. Personally if i were invaded while i was away i would take it as a loss and move and start over (unless i knew the fukker). I had an outdoor plot that got snagged and wish i had one of those hunting cameras that sense motion which sets off the record function, nifty little devices but would it prevent anything...no. and i really think this is what its about. PREVENTION.

A good security sytem would be an asset unless it notified the authorities in the event of a break in.....There are some climate system thingys that can connect to a modem to notify your cell if things go wrong. I think you can use differnet peripherals with them, maybe a motion sensor??? i dont know, never used one.

Keep quiet. Loose lips sink ships, nuff said.

Maybe im too lax with security issues but its not been a problem for me. The only thing i would add is a carbon filter as that is a long overdue addition to my garden. Smell is one of the major factors that contribute to busts in my opinion.

There was a thread about 3 flags to watch out for on the old ddoc.net, maybe nuggdigger can resurect it for us?

I think you hit the nail on the head Kali, the trick is to blend in. If you have huge visible security measures in place in a town the size and temperament of Mayberry your neighbours are likely to wonder what's up. Best to be friendly with the neighbours but not too friendly and just blend into the surroundings.

I put plywood over any windows in the rooms the grows are in. I usually put some knickknacks on the window sill, and then a good curtain or blind. Plywood goes over the curtain/blind level. I use at least 3/4 inch plywood. Works good to sound proof your room from the outside and you can't just break the window, cut the plastic and be in my grow. I use 3 inch screws and hand balm them{less noise for neighbors to suspect, but damn it works the fore arms}. Lots of good points. Keeping to yourself almost forces your neighbors to speculate on what you are up to. Better to have a friendly relationship than them think you are suspicious and start to scrutinize you and snoop. Yards must be kept up always. I try not too look too much like a green thumb on the outside of the house. Good luck. Peace GS

Yeah, it doesn't help much when your buddy peels a big leaf off the back of your sweater at the health food store and the cashier almost OD's from the resin smell om the money you just gave her.
