Hey guys, first time poster, been hanging around here for a while just soaking up the info, and now i am taking the plunge and going vert for my first (gulp) grow :) So, ive read a bunch of threads about it, but would appreciate some direct advice on what size of enclosure to go with for a 400w hps.
Fans? I bought a couple 90mm (i think ) AC fans that apparently are good for about 100cfm according to the label. Hopefully cooling wont be too much of an issue. Opinions?

i suggest rereading the thread i tediously hand typed(lol) called Amusing Musings of Verticality for some ideas.
Since hot air rises the best way to cool the vertical light is with a fan from underneath the bulb, and with only 400 watts heat should not be an issue.

fill us in with some more on your ideas, so we can better understand what you want, and im sure youll find lots great help from our members.
There are lots of great ideas in the Vertical Gardening forum, including smaller wattage systems. My ole chatbuddy booberry had a 400 watt system that did awesome imo, ironically his thread is the last one in the vertical forum.

SOG gardens always yield higher GMS (total garden wattage)/per unit of time, then large plants.
SOG gardens always yield higher GMS/cubic foot garden area. Higher bud density per cubic foot.

variables like plant size, plant count, growing media, watering system, etc is some of the feedback you can give us to help you design from a few big pots in a circle to full on sog vert.

Nugg: As far as plant count, that is a bit up in the air, really more dependent on what my dimensions end up being :) I am going soil, with a cabinet orientation. Ie. not 'coli, a square cab. But the info i am seeing about the vert SOG/SCROG idea with fencing seems to look pretty cool and productive. With one 400W i am thinking a 36" x 36" with about 48" total height cab? Another question would be hanging height for the lamp.....

the top of the bulb should be at the top of the canopy,
im not real big on cabinets, since they usually breathe poorly, but if designed and vented enough to remove the heat and give plants air exchange, then your dimensions are workable, though it may to tight to preform plant maintenance.
I find that an open room system helps keep the heat manageable, and "food" cooks in the 'oven'...lol.

here is some :photo: of my litemeter and a vertical 400watt hps...the readings are taken from the center of the bulb, at the radial distance outward. The meter says multiply by 100 for lumens..
we can see...
#1, at 6" we would have roughly 173,000 lumens
#2, at 9" we would have roughly 111,000 lumens
#3, at 12" we would have roughly 71,000 lumens
#4 at 15" we would have roughly 50,000 lumens
Then my flash died...sigh
the readings do seem a little off to me, but this will give some idea of what to expect.
remember that the larger the radius, the larger the circumference..so by going bigger and having a larger cylinder you gain a lot of area, at a reduced lumen of course. a happy medium is the place to be:cool2:
