Hey,
What would like to know? I am playing "Jonny-Poppy Seed" tomorrow! Find disturbed/naked earth and throw em! :)
I am hoping to plant two or three 4x6 raised beds. I'm using Tasmanians, Persian White and 'Hens and Chickens'. But it needs to be done soon. March to February is the time to plant, they do fine if frost settles in. I've seen people put them in snow and when it melts away the poppies grow! They need to get a head start over the other grasses and weeds (if your not using a garden).
Tasmanians are the most potent, Persian White and 'Hens and Chickens' are both very good. Hens and Chickens tend to have more than one pod. Danish Flag is good and pretty. It's a good idea to mix what you grow so it looks more like a flower bed.
They prefer more P and Ca during 'veg' growth (cabbage), then while bolting/flowering they prefer more N.
Thier roots are VERY delicate and they do not transplant well. They do poorly indoors. They like about 10-12" diameter spacing between plants. They like light, well draining soil/media with a pH of around 7.
They like water in their first few weeks but they are very drought tolerant and do well in those conditions. Make sure to NOT water a week or so before you harvest!
They are not associated to AM (arbuscular mycorrhizas).
Make sure not to water in the last week or so before you start lancing or cut the stalk (1 foot below the pod), taking the stock and the pod/s. This increases the amount of alkaloids and output of latex.
You can lance the pods and collect the latex and make 'cooked opium', or collect the pods/stem (1 foot below the pot) and dry them to make lemon tea (Laudenum), or you can use an 'ice extraction' method with the fresh pods to make 'smoke-able opium' (similar to cooked opium)! I've been working on the ice extraction method, trying to fill in the gaps. The guy who developed it no longer posts at Opiophile and I can't find him elsewhere. The problem is he is Dutch so his English skills are lacking, which makes understanding his method less than easy.

P.S. "Mccormick" poppy seed are viable Tasmanians! You can get them at any grocery store. I just bought 10 packs, they are what I use when I am playing Jonny-Poppy Seed :)
