View Full Version : Am I missing anything?
Hi Folks,
I'm going organic and here's what I've got to mix per bale of ProMix BX (3.8 cu/ft)...
35 L ProMix Ultimate Organic Compost
25 lbs Worm Castings
8 Cups Bone Meal
4 Cups Blood Meal
1.5 Cups Murate of Potash (0-0-60)
2 Cups Epsom Salts
4 Cups Dolimite Lime
10 L Perilite
I will also suppliment the mix with a Bat Guano (2-17-0) infusion every 2 weeks during flowering.
Is there anything else that I should add to this recipe? Also...can I plant well established seedlings/clones (2 weeks old) directly into this mix, or does it need to be watered and sit for a few days first?

some kelp and/or greensand maybe and less of the potash salts
Hi c-ray,
Yea...the Potash was just a guess being so high in concentration. I was thinking of going less on that....maybe less than 1 Cup? The kelp/greensand will add????

potassium and trace minerals..
Hi Bedrockers,
OK...I can't find the greensand (0-1-8) or the kelp meal (?-?-?) locally, but I can order both online. Do I need both of them to sub for the potash? The alfalfa meal is available locally from a farm supply store (big bags...cheap too), so I'll use that in place of the blood meal. How much of each of these ingredients should I use per bale of ProMix? Also...how much is a "little bit of vermiculite"...lol? ;)
Finally...I've read that I need to water this mix and let it sit anywhere from a few days, up to 2 weeks before using it? What is the purpose of this...if needed?

It's going to get "HOT" in there as it breaks down,Dman. It should sit for two months but I figured out that you will be starting slightly ahead of that once the magic card comes.......HeHe
The local outdoor boys have a trick for that......They start the cut/seed in a one gal pot then up pot to a 5 gal for a week or so,plain peatmix no additives. Then they plant the 5gal into a 25gal hole of "Hot mix".The roots will take time growing through the 5gal of peatmix before they hit the hot mix.As you water it over a few weeks ,the water will leach the hot mix slowly into the plain peatmix and the roots get used to the stronger soil.By the time all the roots are into the hot mix they are hardened off.And then you'll see that plant EXPLODE!
Oh and MORE PERLITE.......
Give 'em hell Dman!
Hi Folks,
You kats rock...thank-you! ;) I can't wait until my very first harvest of 100% organic meds! :kind: Of course, I'll do my best to document this entire LEGAL grow from start to finish. :)

I'm enjoying this thread. I would also like to learn more about organics. I already have been using alfalfa pellets. I just got a good local source of chicken guano (how can I test how "hot it is? It's aged but it was still being pooped on, it was about 4-5 inches thick), maybe it's best to use as a tea? I also have a really large bag of vermiculite.
Is Triple Super Phosphate okay to use with an organic mix? Espoma offers it along side of their other organic amendments. I have 50lbs of that too.
I'd planned to use the alfalfa tea & the Triple Super Phos for my outdoor girls, and the chicken poo too since I just found that.
I guess all my question is, Are all of those pretty good ingredients to use, and is there anything I should avoid? Should I include a "K" source like the green sand if using that in a mix for potting?
I hope nobody thinks I'm trying to hijack this thread...(I've been having trouble with that lately). Just trying to learn and participate.
Maybe my yin/yang is outa balance these days.;)
Hi Folks,
Sorry....I got side tracked with the Alfalfa and kelp meal that I totally forgot about the bone meal for the P source. After the flinstoners advice on Mad Cow Disease, and not knowing the actually source of how it was manufactured (or from what)....I'm abit hesitant to use it now??? Can I sub the bone meal with the flowering bat guano (2-17-0) I have instead? How much guano should I use per/bale? Also, will I still need to suppliment with the guano infusion during flowering if it's already in the mix, or just watch the girls to let me know if they are needing it when the time comes?
Sorry for all the questions...real organics is all new to this oldtime "liquid based" organic grower! ;)

Hey Flintstoners,
Thanks for all the great advice.
What's your feeling(s) about the Triple Super Phos? Good, bad, not considered organic? It's a mined mineral, like lime, isn't it. But it's treated somehow to make it "Triple & Super" guess that makes it more readily available....and perhaps synthetic? I assume there must be a reason no one ever seems to mention using it when discussing organic mixes.
Btw, do you know the NPK of chicken poo? Maybe it has all the "P" that's needed in my mix?
Thanks,
GM

I picked up some non-cow bone meal a couple of weeks ago at Walmart. It's made by Miracle Grow.
Peace, SC:rasta:
azomite is a killer organic/all natural additive buddy!
do a search..
have been using it for awhile, are like 60 to 70 trace minerals in it.
much luck and prosperity to you.

Hey Dman,
It's been a while since you started this thread. I was just wondering how your organic girls are doing. Got any photos or info to share?
Peace,

Hey all.
I also use the Azomite, ctg. I also use some Micro-Hume and some Micro-Phos. All are 1000 mesh screened and mix w/ water like crazy. Add some guano..and BAM. LOL, and here I thought I was the only guy who knew what this stuff is!
got 'em all here www.groworganic.com <<<this place has it all!
I also like to use beneficial microbes, mycorrihzaes, etc in my soils at transplanting and via waterings during the grow. Diehard Biorush or Starter mix, GH Sub Culture, Happy Frog Jump Start, Companion, etc. <<<I've used all of these with great results, BTW.
and don't ferget to feed the critters! Molassses, Humics, enzymes...etc. all serve up a smporgasboard of goodies to get things goin in the soil and aid the plant in all facets of growth and disease/pest resistance.
Yeah, how *is* that mix treatin ya by now, Dman? :)
