The main psychoactive component of 'drug type' cannabis, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is present at only very low levels in hemp, which is often used in the food and textile industry.

Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is ideally suited to the identification and quality control of plant material. This work illustrates of potential of NIR spectroscopy to differentiate between 'drug type' cannabis and hemp. The different plant materials were scanned on a FOSS NIRSystems 6500 spectrophotometer with the Rapid Content Sampler module and Vision
