she had 33 one thousand watt lights going indoors, DAMN!! it appears that something of that scale means prison time, even in Canada.
POT GROWING MOM GETS THREE YEARS IN JAIL
Alberta
-------
A 42-year-old seamstress and mother, who operated a huge, toxic commercial marijuana grow operation out of her Airdrie home, has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Court of Queen's Bench Justice Patrick Sullivan said in his decision earlier this week that he accepted an expert police witness's testimony that How Thi Le's home, which contained 822 plants at varying stages of growth when busted on Jan. 30, 2003, was dangerous not only to herself but to her 15-year-old daughter and five-year-old son.
"The most dangerous was that the hot water burner produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide . . . very beneficial to the plants," said Sullivan, alluding to evidence from Det. Sgt. Roger Morrison, a member of the Calgary police drug unit.
"But what is important to me is that it also creates, he ( Morrison ) testified, an extremely toxic environment for anyone in the residence.
"CO is cumulative in the bloodstream and can be fatal. It was his view that if you stayed in the basement for a week, you could easily die. And in children, it can limit proper growth patterns."
Sullivan had found Le guilty of producing a controlled substance, was in possession of an amount exceeding three kilograms, fraudulently obtained electricity, and was in possession of $30,000 of cash derived from the commission of a crime.
The judge also noted there were hazards related to the electrical bypass, which could cause a "flash" that a person could have their eyes burnt or receive a shock from an arc.
The 33, 1,000-watt lights used in three different rooms, he said, used so much power it would make the wire very hot and brittle, again endangering lives.
Aside from the cash found in the dishwasher, wrapped in a way that is consistent with how drug traffickers do so in an international venture, police found receipts for $15,000 to $20,000 in cash payments for grow equipment.
Morrison, said the judge, conservatively estimated the value of a potential 116 kilograms of the drug to be worth $900,000.
However, Morrison has testified that, if sold in the United States, it could be worth more than three times that value.

Well, I don't think her primary concern was med users or some freebies for herself or friends.

The safety comments by the court only show why soo many of us stress, safety , safety, safety and then stress it again.

Alberta has no sense of humor when it comes to growing, I had a friend there do a year for a 1k bloom.
BC is much better but depending on the judge you can do time. I almost did. The prosecutor had to do a big song and dance and my lawyer still said there was realistic chance the judge would ignore our plea bargain and toss me in the slammer.

if the dea had found it the value would have been $900 million instead of $900,000.

Stealing electricity got her popped I'm sure, and got her added time. I dont understand if you're running 33kw, why not have a top of the line lawyer on retainer.....
ALberta is the Texas of Canada.....all conservatives

Getting caught in the states is a different ball game....
But really, I wonder how long she was up and running for, before she got caught. I wonder if she got a min. security prison, cause sending someone to max for growing is crazy, although I think it depends on the length of yoru sentence where you go.
I wonder how growers get treated in jail, I wonder if people just leave you alone....

I would wager that a few years ago it was nothing more than a personal grow under a 125 or 400 watt setup.. she was surprised at how much yield she received at that first grow...
then she figured... hmmmm, why not just make it a bigger grow and make some money too...
second year was a 1k light setup, 3rd was 2 or 3k setups.... well, than she just got greedy, or crazy, depending on your perspective...
the end result... 3 years in prison.

K, I am going to have to go against what you said.
First there is no way she started small, and there is no way she was doing this alone. She is a vietnamese, and I'm sure she had a lot of help putting this together......

not that it's what i do, but you seem to have a problem with it? if so, and if you wouldn't mind, i'd like to hear your perspective on it?
it seem to be a very looked-down-upon by many, but i don't think i've ever seen anyone elaborate on it.. just comments like that, that convey to me that you find the thought abhorrent and intolerable? like, basically you think she got what she deserved.

no, i don't have any significant problems with the concept, just a speculation on her thought process.
my above post(s) have absolutely no conncetion to my personal felings on commercial grows/ growers.

It's very unlikely that she started off small and just as unlikely that she was the one who owned the grow. She would have been a worker that had things in her name and got about 25%, if she was lucky.
I started the same way in a large hydro house in Calgary so i know a fair bit about it. She would have definitely had a hydro tap and that is something they throw the book at you for, large fines as well.
It's also more than likely it was organized crime.

she was probably more of a victim, bad guys were probably the ones who set her up and 'convinced' her it was a good idea, too bad she had to pay for it and not them..

c-ray, imo given the nationality of the woman, in all likelyhood you're absolutely right.. all part of risk/reward. however, apparently she didn't roll.. good girl.

Classic Viet Cong grow.......
Mr Big gets new migrants from Vietnam to do gardening and pays them a pitance......
There was one behind me in South Van.Old Viet couple were the gardeners,an SUV arrived once every two months ,for three days, for harvest time.....You could smell that house over two blocks away(Hid my smell thank god!) They were still at it after two years! And they used to dump their shake and peatmix in the local donut shop dumpster.....where the cops ate at!
I'm not a fan as the VC as they just grew crap beaster weed and dropped the price in BC from 2800 to 1800 in 6 months!Grrrrrr
Lugen007
05-06-2006, 01:36 AM
Ya they single handly have dropped the price dramatically in Canada. They're weed is bunk too, no flavor, short lived high....but the yields are good probably, if they are even growing them properly.
From $2800 to $1800.....fuckers

Ya its back logging b.c, and bringing prices down too. But the viets popping houses up EVERYWHERE has been a major cause of price drop.

suppose she WASNT stealing power, suppose she had a 200amp main panel and was using the power legit......
How long you think it would take to go down with large electricity bills?

with the right excuses and tight security.. barring acts of god.. imo, never.

INTERESTING!!!
So you're saying if she was using a business or something as a cover up, and a proper large main panel to keep everythign under 80% amperage rating, you're saying she would have NEVER gotten busted. I figured her bills would be about $1200/month or so...CDN
Carpet Muncher
05-10-2006, 10:59 PM
look.. what do i know? but i did have a business for 10yrs and my power bill was that high every single month.. higher by about $500 a couple of times a yr when i needed to rent a refer.. have no clue what % of the panel i used.. no one ever questioned me about it.. why would they?
ps.. don't be greedy.. pay your fucking taxes. and as a rule, don't spend more than 20% over your declared income, with undeclared income. (should you be so inclined to withhold a little from uncle sam.)
but since i'm too chicken, i'll probably never know.. though i've thought a lot about it. "all the world is a stage.." take it from there.. down to the smallest detail.. be prepard for your part.
