I am newer to SCROG and had my first crop come off recently.

One of the problems that I noticed is that the top buds were large and got progressively smaller as they grew towards the bottom of the stem.

How does one get the maximum yield?

Do you harvest the tops and then let the buds get bigger on the bottom?

If so, how do you time the flush?

Thanks in advance

one strategy is to 'stage harvest'....harvest the tops and let the bottoms fill in for another 1-2 weeks

another and probably better strategy is to clean up (remove) all the bottom scraggle so the plant can put it's energy into the tops...now that you've seen what they do you can probably figure out which stuff to remove...the earlier you remove them the better

Is this what you mean about scraggle??

Interesting post, but without pictures.

Thank you!

this is a very useful thread. I do think a picture of plants now and at harvest will help many people get over the fear of pruning

indoors we dont have the benefits of sunlight, so growing an unpruned plant indoors is not going to result in good lighting, like it can outdoors

even outdoor plants benefit from shaping up, ie, removing lower skinny branches

I will propose a rule of thumb:
remove the bottom 3 branch pairs on a clone, top it at node 7. This leaves 6 blooming branches, much like Pistilwhipt is doing.

Im trying to point out that there is a pattern, the bottom 3 pairs tend to get shaded. Plants with 6 heads do well indoors. Dont top the blooming branches, only top the main shoot, and only once. Remove the bottom 3 branch pairs (or alternates) on the 6 blooming branches too.

Notice how Pistilwhipt "reads" the plants, iow, look at the canopy mass and size of root zone. They move towards being the same size. No wimpy skinny branches in Pistilwhipt's examples.

Way to go!

scraggle = loose lower buds

heh. hey kids. long time no chat.

a strategy I like is to do a little pruning to avoid the popcorn bud effect one gets from the stuff below the screen...as well as avoid (what I deem) the inefficiency of staged harvesting.

allow plant to develop 6 nodes - give or take. remove first 2-3 from bottom up. This configuration will allow the most useful growth to reach the screen, while eliminating the need to prune lower growth. I'm a fan of doing as little pruning as possible.

I like a screen about 10" above the top of the container from which the plant grows (for indoors...for outdoors, it works to pre-make an 8'x8' area of chickenwire w/2" holes (larger ok, smaller not) with edges defined by/attached to something heavy...such as 2x4s or whatever you have handy...simply lay flat over plant & perpetually train plain under the chickenwire...stop training about the end of the first/second week of august). allow plants to reach screen & begin training for horizontal growth. continue removing (as they develop) branches which are clearly not going to be generating decent bud once the screen is fill...ie: anyting about 2" below the screen.

voila. no crappy popcorn bud.

man, long time no post. the feds still patrolling this board? Hi guys!
