forest question

I was hiking in the forest today, and came across a spot that had been logged off some years ago. I would estimate that the area was a mix of about 1/3rd hard woods, and 2/3rds pines. Raspberry bushes were pretty well established - averaging about 3' tall. As a guess, would you say the soil in this area would be OK? Can anybody offer advice as to a good quality soil kit that is readily available?

I'll guess that it is acidic, try grabbing some soil next time, take some from various depths, bring it home and pour some water through it and measure the pH of the runoff and compare it to the pH of your starting water

soil will likely be better in the hardwood stands
