some folks are using dowsing (http://www.newsmonster.co.uk/content/view/109/72/) to guess the sex of their chicken eggs (http://www.e-chickens.com/dowsing.htm) and to guess the gender of their human babies (http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=82438)

I think it might be possible to guess seed sex to some degree...I'm going to explore this further in the next few weeks

as well I'd like to explore the use of dowsing as a general analytical tool, for instance a dowser in theory should be able to take a leaf and do some nutritional analysis on it

its not that i don't doubt the potential of it....its the science of it:rant:
now that i got that out of the way, go ahead and "open the portal"
there are many unexplained things in life..just because we don't understand them doesn't mean they don't work. I used to use dowsing for decisions in many of my garden chores. Now i rely upon experience and plant comprehension. Fwiw, i feel we're in touch now better then before...lol

how do you tell the sex of a plant? It's very unscientific, but so far, pretty interesting in its results.

Hold a pendulum over the plant. This can be a needle on a thread, a seashell on fishing tackle, a necklace, whatever. The pendulum will move of its own accord to indicate the sex of the plant.

Try it. The really healthy plants will be female (positive). They will make the pendulum move in a clockwise circle over the top of it.

The male (negative) plant will make the pendulum move from side to side. If the pendulum doesn't move at all, the plant is neutral or the soil is lifeless. Forget it. Nothing is going to come out of that.

It's called dowsing and is the same method that has people finding water using a Y shaped pointed stick. Scientific? Nope. Does that mean it doesn't work? Not at all.

DOWSING TOOLS
by Richard Webster

Dowsing is the art of divining for something that is desired. Usually, people dowse for water or minerals that are hidden underground. However, dowsing is much more versatile than this and has a large variety of uses. Just recently, I was in Munich and saw two people using a pendulum to decide which of two places they should visit. They did not have time to visit both, and were asking their pendulum which would be the better place for them to visit on this trip. I know someone who uses a pendulum to determine the sex of unborn chickens. While my children were growing up, they frequently asked me to find lost objects for them, and I would have to produce my pendulum and use it to find the missing items. These are all examples of dowsing.

When people think about dowsing, they usually visualize someone holding a forked stick which reacts when the person is standing over an underground source of water. This is the traditional dowsing tool, and it can easily be made from a V- or Y- shaped piece of branch cut from a peach or willow tree. The dowsing rod is held with the palms upward, holding the two ends of the forks.

The elbows should be held close to the body, keeping the stick in a state of tension. If you are searching for underground water, you need to think casually about your desire for water, and then walk over the ground until the forked stick reacts. Usually, this is a strong downwards pull, which is known as the dowsing response.

Angle rods make a better device to start with, as they are more sensitive than the forked stick.
They consist of two L-shaped pieces of metal wire, approximately twelve inches by six. The dowser holds these loosely in his hands, with the twelve-inch sections pointing forwards. The two rods should be parallel. Again, thinking of what he or she is dowsing for, the dowser walks forwards until the angle rods react, usually by crossing over each other, but sometimes by moving outwards. Some people grip the angle rods too tightly, restricting the movements. If this is a problem, the remedy is to cover the shorter section of the rods with plastic or wooden tubing that allows the rods to move freely inside. The casing from a cheap ball-point pen works well for this.

A small weight attached to a length of thread, cord or chain is probably the most convenient device for dowsing. This is called a pendulum. Ideally the weight should be at least a few ounces, and the thread should be four to six inches long. The cord is held between the thumb and first finger, allowing the weight to move freely. Stop the movement of the weight with your free hand, and then ask the pendulum to indicate a "yes" response. It might take a minute or two for the pendulum to react the first time you try this, but eventually it will move from side to side, backwards and forwards, or in a circular motion, either clockwise or anti-clockwise. This is what makes the pendulum so versatile, as the different movements allow it to give a range of different answers. Once you have the movement that indicates "yes", you should ask for "no", followed by "I don't know" and "I don't want to answer".

Now you can ask the pendulum any questions you like that can be answered by one of these responses. You will be impressed with the quality of information you receive. However, there is one important caveat. Do not ask the pendulum any questions in which you are emotionally involved in the outcome. This is because, in these cases, the pendulum will give you the answer you want, rather than the correct answer. If, for example, someone close to you is pregnant and you want to find out if the baby will be a boy or girl, the pendulum will provide the correct answer if you honestly do not care what the sex of the unborn baby is. However, if you already have three sons, and are hoping for a daughter this time, the pendulum will probably indicate a girl, even if that is not correct, because of your emotional involvement in the outcome.

Some people are able to dowse with their hands. There are a variety of ways of doing this, but the most common is for the person to shake his or her hands while walking over the area being dowsed. Once he or she has located whatever it is that is being searched for, the hands stop shaking.

An extension of this is to use the entire body. I find this particularly useful when buying books.
If I have a choice of two books, and am not certain which one to buy, I place one to my left and the other to my right. I then close my eyes, and silently ask which book I should buy. My whole body involuntarily leans toward the book that would be most useful to me, and this is the one I buy.

What I especially like about body dowsing is that it can be done without anyone noticing. It is slightly more difficult to suspend a pendulum over different books without attracting attention.
All of the different methods work well, and I use all of them at different times. Like everything else, practice is required, but it is a useful skill that can enhance your life in many different ways.

I guess lrus could be right..it may not work for him. How do we start to explain something that we can't understand. For reasons of simplification I'll draw it up to being a 'gift' or 'talent' though Ive observed it passed down over the blood line. Everyone strives to be unique and special, and dowsing is just 'hokey' enough to be an easily manipulated con. Also its easy to fool ones self into believing something is happening that isn't etc.

For starters, dowsing usually refers to the finding of water and there are various methods. Divining conotates a stronger sense..the essence of one asking questions to the device and receiving answers..sounding much like a Ouija board.

Perhaps this explains why so many people are hokey and misguided. There is a lot of general knowledge on this topic that is based on second hand stories, and fairly non-reliable for the most part.

So back to the gifts or talents: they are things to be used respectfully for purpose and not abused, this is common knowledge i assume. When you see someone trying to display talents, unmodestly..and trying to persuade others he has certain powers, you wonder of his legitimacy. Karma knows this and dishes talents accordingly. I'm reminded of the dowser who was so good he charged 1000 bux..after his third pop...he mysteriously lost his talent..haha.

The main issue i have with the link from the "Skeptical Inquiry" is that it is done on a large amount of people, and its hard to base a conclusion on averages that are only partially useful. For example, would it not have been better to study the good dowsers and see how good they are etc? Instead what I'm seeing is some are okay, some are better, some are great, and some are full of it..lol.

So what do i have to do with it?..lol Well i dowse for water, and receive my readings from the reactions of the wands. The power is not in the wands, they are just the antenna/amplifiers. The voltage is internal. I can explain in detail how it works IMO if you'd like. But will save rambling for now...lol..oops..lol

Anyways, i drilled water wells for over a dozen years, and this was a great opportunity to compile notes from observations. After all any fool can say..yes there is water down there and walk away. It's a little different to have to tell a land holder that you consider there is water bearing strata and at what approximate depth and sufficient volume, then have to consistently prove it. Due to lack of dry holes we stayed in buisness till buyout;) Through the process of trial..by dowsing..observing strata and water depths, and completing the well and re-dowsing even after to calibrate ones dowsing skills that goes beyond the average dowser. Over the years i was able to hone in on my gift, as it was a good compliment to my trade. Like instruments..gifts take tuning to be effective. Ask any backhoe operator, linelocator, or driller if they think it's crap.

Peace, nug

Lrus, apparently im wrong, i stand corrected. What i had remembered was it was an attempt at flash curing out all the moisture out of the bud and the bud was left carmelized in thc after.Must have been some other TS story..lol.
I appoligize and thanx for crapping on c-rays thread/dreams.

Cray, i say what have you got to lose anyways..if your going to sow seeds, run your mini test just to see how it comes out. I'd still be interested to hear the results, but post up b4 you sprout, and after..so there is no cheatin':cowboy:

sure maybe what I can do is figure a way to cut one of the bottom leaves of a plant so I can't cheat, cut one way for fems the other way for males and there is always the 3rd option unknown or hermie...not sure if I want to go there

maybe I could send you pics of the seedlings for you to dowse as well since you are probably a little more pro at it than I

from http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2008/02/27/will-the-egg-grow-up-to-be-a-hen-or-a-rooster/

Will the Egg Grow Up to Be a Hen or a Rooster?

WHETHER an egg is a potential rooster or an embryonic hen can be determined, it is claimed, by a “sexometer” which may prove to be of value in the poultry industry, for when the sex of eggs can be told, it will be possible to send most of the rooster eggs to market and retain the hen eggs for the upbuilding of the home flock.

The “sexometer” consists of a piece of cork wound with copper wire from which is suspended a pendulum of wire ending in a flat piece of aluminum-plated substance. In examining the egg, the cork is held in one hand and the egg in the other. If the egg is male, the pendulum, it is claimed, will swing in a circle. If it is female, the pendulum is said to swing back and forth.

It has been demonstrated that the device, when held over one egg, will swing in a circle; yet when it is held over another, it will swing back and forth. Whether these varying motions are due to the sex of the egg, or to such incidental qualities as shape and size, is a puzzle that no one has been able to answer. The inventor claims that in experiments covering a period of six months, the instrument forecasts on 85 per cent of the eggs tested were correct.

Had an old gummer come dowse last summer. Can't say I really believed it worked until he had me hold half the stick, the pressure I had to put into the stick to keep it from tilting was pretty incredible.
