What are a person's right's when it comes to door to door searches? There was a dangerously violent escaped felon from the county jail in my area recently, and my blood ran cold when they started doing door to door searches. Thank the devil, that I don't live anywhere near any sort of penal system! But I was wondering if any of my comrades in arms had to submit in a situation like that????? And if the evidence found, if any, would be admissible in court??? Batman??? Anyone????

Unless the police are in what's called "hot pursuit", which is to say they had him in sight and he ran into a house or apartment, they can go right in without asking.
however if they are merely doing a sweep of a neighborhood, without any substantial evidence that the perp is in fact within one of the houses they want entry to, you can refuse, politely.
if you do allow them entry and they were to see anything illegal, yes, it can be used against you in court.
I'm moving this thread to the "security and law" forum.

another thing to watch for is mistaken 911 calls. I had that happen when my little one was playing with the phone. They called me back and I told them no, that I didn't call them, not even realising she had called them by pressing random buttons (what are the chances?) Anyway they told me a cop was going to call me back and he did and he asked me a bunch of uncomfortable questions, then ended with "We usually send a car over to search your place but we are busy tonight" I said, well you are welcome to do that". he replied "no thanks" and hung up.
I went and cleaned out my underpants.

worse is when they show up on a 'supposed' 9-11 call, in which case it pays to keep the house nice n' tidy

Best cure I've found for the whole 911 call thing was to disconnect my land line. No phone line=no 911 calls.
Now I just gotta hope and pray I don't have a fire or a midnight intruder :^/

Would that work? It sounds like an annoyance that just will go away if you ignore it long enough. I wish it were that easy.

LMAO~ good one resinman... :D
now, if they're looking for an escaped convict or something, that might be a bad thing. they might assume that he's in there and has you hostage, I mean why wouldn't someone open the door for officer friendly..? must be something askew. ;)

On the use of cell phones and calling 911: Don't know about other states, but here in California, 911 calls generated by cell phones go directly to the California Highway Patrol. So, if you ever have to call 911 in an emergency, it might be a lot better to use a neighbor's phone.
