Members of the Royal St. Christopher/Nevis Police Force’s Drug Unit had a massive drug haul yesterday with the uprooting of some 23,000 marijuana plants.
The plants were discovered by the officers while they were engaged in a five-hour exercise during the early part of the morning.
Sergeant Travis Rogers of the Drug Unit, in an interview with the SUN, said the plants were found at Franklands on five lots of land.
He said the lots of land ranged in size from 2,000 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft and the plants ranged in size from seedlings to 12 feet in height.
Describing the catch as the “biggest haul for the year”, the sergeant indicated that approximately 23,150 plants, having a street value of in excess of US$1million, were uprooted.
Rogers said he and his team were “happy” because they were able to assist in the fight against drugs and crime.
He also noted that marijuana abuse is one of the leading causes of criminal activity in the Federation.
“It makes my team and I very happy to see that we are able to assist in ridding the streets of drugs and this is in keeping with the theme of the drug squad, to assist in any way to rid the streets of drugs.
“One of the effects that I have recognised is that once it is abused, it drives people to commit of acts of violence and that is one of the contributory factors to the rise in our crime rate,” Rogers said.
Rogers added that they are going to make investigations to establish who is responsible for the cultivation of the illegal plants.
He explained that the department is committed to the eradication of drugs and have pledged to continue in their endeavours.
“I can say we sort of do it weekly, however, because of other constraints where we have to fight in the urban areas, we are being prevented from going into the mountains to do eradication. However, we are on a drive right now and we are planning on doing it at least once weekly.”
