This was 4 yrs ago so they are probably waaayy better at locating plants now...

Just thought that I'd give you the heads up!

Conclusions
Based on the approach taken and the results observed, we can draw the primary conclusion that it is possible under well controlled conditions to detect illegal marijuana grow operations using high spatial and spectral resolution data. The probability of detection is good, but the rate of false target identification is also high. Most importantly, detection using this approach can’t be done operationally. The conditions required for the detection of marijuana are difficult to achieve, even with careful planning and under proper weather conditions (few cloud, little haze and high sun angles). The increasingly smaller sizes of operations that growers have adopted in this region make an operational approach even more difficult. The most promising method currently available to enforcement agencies for the detection of grow
operation is with a complete GIS and remote sensing model, such as the described in Section 4. This method doesn’t detect actual marijuana plants, but rather identifies highly probable areas for growing illegal marijuana in the Gulf Islands of British
Columbia.

this conclusion seems to admit failure to identify small grow plots,
