Everything is a thought and as plants are non self locomoting, it (canna) had to invent happiness and analgesia for itself in rudimentary elements to express the thought it represented and those elements had to be close at hand. As it expanded its territorial claims by spreading the joy virus to animals that happily ingested it, it developed nuances and characteristics of the joy it found in the varying elements of locale. Humans, when infected, furthered the will of the plant. However, Corporations couldn't have folks being happy and pain free for nothing , now could they.

I would say that MJ was born around the same time period as other modern plants, I would hazard a guess as a sub-tropical or even tropical home for it's very beginnings, and spread by nature (be it wind, migration, or event) so early that it was already native in most lands by the time humans/our ancestors recognized it as a resource. As a hardy annual it underwent a very diverse and varied evolution.

But what the Hell do I know, I'm 96 to 99% Chimpanzee, and stoned....

I like the capt's most excellent synopsis
I am thinking all living things being borne of primordial bacteria, something like somatids as discovered by gaston naessons with high powered microscopes
phyto=plant
photo=light
the sublevel pre bacteria which was essentially bits of light reorganized by our will and desires into an appropriate form, perhaps cannabis was unique in the phyto world or perhaps it sprang/transmutated from another plant form, possibly is was borne out of reformed bacteria in our colon (colony)
then there is the question of nature spirits and their role
it is very connected to the human spirit that is for sure but everything being interconnected in this world it was manifested in a sobeit moment
needs more thoughts I will come back later
