I have a question about breeding.

As I understand it, when a cross has been made and a good pheno found, it's when this plant is BX'd that the favorable traits often start appearing in the next generation.
And when many plants are grown, favorable traits in males are sometimes 'eyed', as we aren't smoking them, and trying to get the best progeny rebred into the next generation is the attempt.

So.

How do we know that the best males are the ones with the 'most obvious' and/or 'immediately showing' traits?
Isn't it possible that the best males are the ones that appear nonchalant or indifferent, and they would make great parents, but their traits wouldn't show until after being BX'd?

The best way to determine the value of a male in a breeding program is a test cross. A male is only as valuable as the traits he passes to his daughters.
