I got a corporate laptop, looks like I am going to change jobs and I want to erase my hard drive so they do not get my 18 yr client lists. I AM NOT the administrator, the IT guy is. I can delete the contents however I'm under the impression he can just restore to a earlier date and all the program and data is still there, is this true, if so how do I prevent it without destroying it, if I do it will cost me about $600, its worth it to me, however I want to leave on good terms, but with my data.

Thanks in advance

49.99$ and 5$ shipping......swap the drive for a new blank one.
What are they going to do, say you stole an old device yet gave them a new one ?
They'll probably never know.

is that drive compatible to his laptop?

I know my laptop (toshiba) would need a certain hd to run it.

DBAN! Deriks Boot and Nuke will solve all your wiping needs and it's free. you can set how many times you want it to wipe the drive. btw 37 wipes takes about a weekend for a 60gig HD

If they made a ghost of your system no amount of wiping will help you, all they have to do is restore the ghost. Better would be to drop it in front of a bus, oops.

Gawd you guys....

If you retain the old HDD, you have all the contact data for yourself, you can fire up the old HDD on your home PC if you know how (kinda simple really).

The one I posted a link to is a PATA100/133 drive (UDMA 5 or 6).
It will work on most any lappy made in the last 3-4 years....but to be definate we need *something* that relates to a make and model of the lappy in question.

Now, as for Ghosting an image....
*IF* the HDD is a different size than what is currently in the lappy the Ghost image will not work :)
Ya get it ?
All hardware has to be EXACT for a Ghost image to work.

Do you want me to go into it deeper ?
55$ for saving your old data and giving them none seems pretty damn cheap to me.....but hey, what would I know, I'm only the dumb Network Engineer for a IT company :D

if they have a Ghost image or a full back then wiping is usless BUT they would have had to made the ghost image AFTER you had that data on your laptop.

the ghost image i use just has all the software and anti-virus stuff the user will need and is installed prior to the user getting it.

if you kept your contacts in outlook and your IT dept backs up email and retains a copy then wiping won't help either.

but it will remove all the porn!

i call bullshit BECAUSE i do it all the time. different models and different hard drive and MB's the trick is after you reinstall the ghost image you put in the win XP cd and have it repair. but then again i'm a stupid network admin with too much time on my hands. and for the record i use a 2yr old ghost image on PC's i just purchased.

So....your PATA hard drive images work on SATA hard drives huh?
I bet it sees the controller southbridge just fine.
Nah, the PCI-E video will run just fine off the AGP drivers without any issues huh?
I bet the chipset is the exact same too :)
F6, what the hell does that mean ?

Dood, do you know how stupid that shit sounds to someone that actually understands how hardware works and how much it has changed in the last 2 years ?
Of course if you're buying 2 year old PC's it will probably work just fine.

i'll explain it a bit slower for you. we have a certain set of software apps that we use. i installed them all on one laptop over 2 years ago. for the past 2 years every time i get a new laptop i use that image and then run the windows Xp repair and they work fine. i have another ghost image i use for desktops. servers are a different story, i setup each server THEN make a ghost image for use only on that server in case of disaster recovery.
and considering that the newst laptops are Lenovo pieces of crap i'm pretty sure they are newer then 2 yrs old.

I like "killdisk", free and it works well. I've gone through the same thing. I had a company laptop that had "stuff" on it and they were giving me a new one and handing mine down to a new hire. Well I used killdisk to write over the hard drive with 1s and 0s then I re-installed the OS and handed it off.

DOD standard is ten overwrites before the disk is considered clean btw.

p.s. Just look at all the IT folks we got here, me included - I'm a project manager speciallizing design, developement, and implementation of large financial system and I used to write a bit of code in COBOL, PL/SQL, SQL etc... we could start our own company if we wanted to!

ehhhhhhhhhh COBOL i had to take 6 classes in that and i don't remeber a fucking thing EXCEPT what a pain in the ass it was to write cobol code 10 yrs ago!
i programed in basic for years. i prefer the IT side of things, writing code sucks.

and for what it's worth i'm sure i'll have to make a new ghost image some day but my point was that a ghost image CAN be used on a different machine with different components.

Maybe I'm just reading too clearly, you specifically stated PC's in your Ghost comment.
Craptops are another story, they haven't changed much in the last 5 years.

If his lappy has a 80-100 gig HDD and he replaces it with a 20-40 gigger we both know that the install of the image will choke, big time.
Thats what I was talking about.

BTW, I used to program in Fortran and Cobol too :\
Gawd does that show our age or what ?

Maybe you can answer a question for me tho....
I recently *aquired* a Adaptec AIC-8130 4 port SATA raid card, and it's a 64 bit card.
Do you happen to know if I can run it in a 32 bit slot (it is cut to run in either) ?
It's from a HP Proliant, HP doesn't know (or won't tell me) and Adaptec doesn't know (or won't tell me).
It's kind of a rare beast, but they work well and I'd sure hate to toss it in a recycle pile.

mace
09-13-2006, 08:35 PM
proliant was originally by compaq...

compaq was compatible with... errr... mostly compaq :D
but you could give it a go, if you feel lucky

if anyone has some cheap registered ecc dimm for my ap400 i'd be happy, would cost me 50euros per 256 modul...

yeah our drug testing policy would involve a bong and a few loads of good herb - if you refuse, you don't get the job!

I have a buddy that works for an aerspace company (uber high tech stuff).
When he went thru the hiring process his soon to be boss called him in to take a drug test.
He led him to an office with 4 bongs and a few z's of misc herb and said 'here's your test, get busy'.

Lucky fuck, he has the best job/employer out of anyone I know....

OldSog

back when i was a programmer we never got tested but then again i worked for my best friend and we would usually smoke as doob at lunch time.

at my current job my boss also smokes AND we share the same hobby! the only down side is he grows the same stuff i do.

joe6pack
09-14-2006, 01:04 AM
Well I don't get tested for work, however there is a "probable cause" clause in the company that says they can demand a test if they feel there's probably cause. Never heard of it happening to anyone though. I'm a consultant so in the end it comes down to how happy the client is with me and my work - if the client was happy with me doing bong hits at my desk well then my company wouldn't say shit - as long as the billable hours keep coming in....

Cobol...I took it too and hated it almost as much as accounting!
VB was much more fun.
Still wish I had learned C and more Java....

They say that 75% of the worlds production code is written in COBOL, either IBM or Unisys. And with the cost of converting systems and the aging baby boomer population it just might not be a bad language to know....

Let's see

Perform 1000-Load-and-smoke-bong thru
1000-Load-and-smoke-bong-end
varying strain from 1 by 1
until 88-very-stoned
