My virus program tells me I have the "win32.SillyDI.AEI" virus...says it can't clean it or repair it. It gives me the directory it is in but when I look in Explorer it doesn't show up and I can't I find it with search...my Explorer is set up to show all hidden files and folders.

This is the directory it is in
c:\documents and settings\home\local settings\temporary internet files\content. ie5\SDABCLYJ\mediaview[1].cab>elite.ocx

Any ideas????

TIA

Hi Buckwheat :)

start in "safe mode"

explorer (not IE), menu->Tools->Folder Options:
-show hidden files and folders
-show system files
-un-hide extensions for known files
-un-hide protected operating system files
- klick apply

then look for the file again, can you see it now? If so, delete it.

an OCX is an "activeX control", a special kind of a DLL.

Hope this helps,

mace

btw., the file you are looking for should be "mediaview[1].cab", better et, empty the folder "c:\documents and settings\home\local settings\temporary internet files\" completely (delete all of its contents)

Mace,
Ok that did it...Thx
My Explorer is hiding files even though it's told not to. I found that file by doing a file search and deleted it there. I've had 4 hrs of aggravation getting rid of this virus this morning, I'll figure out why Explorer isn't working later.

Now time to reboot and see if my PC works still...LOL

hope it worked Buckwheat.

The reason for the safe mode is that normally you cannot delete files that are in use, like DLL's or OCX's. In the safe mode only the minimum of DLL's should be loaded, the ones that belong to the system.

Had these probs very often with IE that suddenly a new "feature" would be installed like in your case, the media player is using an IE control (ocx) to display infos from the web, this might the hole. But then again, it could be something completely different. Don't ya hate that?

That sucker is gonna make a reg file and *mysteriously* reappear.

You'll have to run 'HiJackThis' and kill it that way.
A quick google search will pull up where to download it at.

Dumbass, shouldn't be surfing pRon sitez.
I thought I taught you better than that?

Cotton Balls ; you never cease to amaze me with your postings
Firstly; wattage and yield ( lamp wattage has no bearing on crop yield)
and now computer advise.
We all have our strengths and weaknesses, for example ; i would not offer any input on fixing anything electrical , or give advise on computers
i'd feel like a right tosser knowing i had screwed up His/Her stuff
Cotton Balls; do you have a particular field of experience that you can focus on , or are you a jack of all trades?

Thanks :D

A real grower can get a decent yield with a 250 or a 400 and not waste money on electricity.
You seem to not be able to pull that off with a few 1k's....
Jealous?

Elohim hit the nail on the head.Stop using IE and get a real browser and lessen your headaches. Firefox or Opera will make you smile :)

Ok, everybody (in this industry) should do the following...

Ditch Windows

Never use IE

Get a Mac

If your budget doesn't allow for a Mac, learn to use Linux

Its just a safer way to go, if you must use Windows (for a special application that only runs on Windows) then do yourself a favor and run it under VMWare, Parallels.

This will not guarantee you will never get a Virus, Worm or whatever dangerous scripts exist. But it will allow you a certain amount of "protection" when you explore the darker side of the iNet.
