(CBS) MURRIETA, Calif. Authorities seized 672 marijuana plants valued at roughly $2 million Wednesday from an upscale neighborhood on the west side of Murrieta, a law enforcement official said.
The marijuana plants were found in the morning Wednesday on the hillside behind a residence on Edna Road. Authorities, acting on a tip, went to the location and discovered the drug plants, said Tim Hales of the Murrieta-Temecula Regional Gang Task Force.
The suspected growers tapped into the residence's water supply and ran a line up the hillside to irrigate the plants, said Hales, supervisor of the local, state and federal task force.
The homeowners, who were marketing the residence for sale at $2.9 million, are not believed to be involved in the growing operation, he said.
A gardener at the residence was taken into custody for questioning at the U.S. Border Patrol station in Murrieta, after authorities determined that he was an undocumented worker, Hales said.
The neighborhood in which the plants were found is home to several multimillion-dollar estates which nestle up against the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve.
