The Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force, working in conjunction with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, arrested two suspects from Mississippi for trafficking marijuana in Fort Bend County.
The arrests occurred after deputies stopped a 1999 Chevy Suburban for a traffic offense on U.S. 59 in Sugar Land. The vehicle was being driven by Jesus Vela of Gautier, Miss., and accompanied by a passenger identified as Gavin Stokes of Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force conducted a roadside investigation and subsequently discovered a suitcase containing 18 pounds of marijuana in the rear compartment of the vehicle. In addition to the marijuana, narcotics agents located $11,750 cash in a duffel bag in the same compartment.
The suspects were arrested, transported to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony possession of marijuana.
These arrests were the result of a HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) operation where the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force and the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division concentrate their efforts on drug smugglers transporting illegal drugs along U.S. 59 in Fort Bend County.
The vehicle and the money located in the vehicle were taken into the possession of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force and a Chapter 59 Seizure Affidavit filed with the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office.
The bonds on Vela and Stokes were set at $25,000 each by Pedro Ruiz, associate district judge.
