A traffic stop near Monticello last week ended with the confiscation of 790 pounds of marijuana worth $1 million and the arrest of four people from two states.
On July 6, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper discovered the drugs after stopping a truck for speeding about 10:45 p.m. on State Road 191, about a mile north of Monticello, UHP spokesman Jeff Nigbur said. The male driver and a female passenger gave conflicting information to the trooper during the stop, which raised some red flags, Nigbur said. The couple consented to a search of their vehicle, and the trooper found the drugs wrapped in plastic.
“It was just these huge bricks of dope,” Nigbur said.
The couple, who are not from Utah, told investigators they were delivering the drugs to New York state.
On July 8, three UHP employees were allowed to drive the marijuana to New York. They made contact with two men who were arrested after trying to pay $12,000 for the delivery of the drugs.
Charges against the three men and the woman were expected to filed in federal court, Nigbur said.
