do most people use vic highs mehod? or are there alot simpler methods?...wat method do u use?.....
I prefer doing 'selective open-pollenation'. Examine all males/females in the intended breeding population, then select the BEST handful of males/females. Use whatever criteria you think produces the best males/females for your male/female selection. I like to use the plants that stink the most, have the stink I want, and have the 'feel' to them. Native shamans might refer to this 'feel' as the 'alpha' plants or 'chieftans'. They are the superior plants of the tribe, if ya catch my drift.
And of course try to use as many seeds as possible for selecting breeding stock from.

thnx man, nice site ,glad there are mature people here not lik alot of other sites,im 50 and too ole for the bs...on other sites.trying to get the whole breeding thing down, hand copied ,paper and pen,vic highs method, took 1 and 1/2 hours,no printer here, not my equipment, but im on it ,one way or the other.got clarks book, but the in and outs are somtimes better understood on internet.vics method is very long and drawn out,but hey i guess it just very proffesional from stand point,if ur trying to make f1,s.,,
Hi Clone,
Have a specific goal in mind when breeding...eg: easier growth, better smell/flavour, more potency...etc. ALWAYS breed from clones that have been selected for the traits you desire. Clones usually perform better than the parents, so it's easy to possibley miss something special if you breed from seed. For me, potency is the top priority, and you must smoke the parent plant before being able to determine whether it's worthy of breeding.
Selection of males should follow the same criteria, keep only the clones of the parents that have the traits you're after.....and breed from those. ;)

Hey clone,
Check out the books in my sig. You might first want to try breeding vegetable crops (not in my sig). Its more laymen oriented. Was recomended to me and other I believe by the TLB frequently.
Breeding Field Crops has a very good section on Methods in plant breeding and the last few chapters are about "miscellaneous breeding procedures" with different crops.
Have fun.

I'm still trying to prefect my seed hack skills...real breeding takes time, skill, numbers and knowledge......none of which I have.

Now Buckwheat, we know this ain't all quite true. You got some skills --> the "POOOF -Technique" for instance, eh?
LOLOL
knowledge = dangerous, just look at me right!

"The Poof Technique"
Collect all the pollen from your best males(can be multiple strains if you wish)on a piece of wax paper then put all your selected moms in front of a fan and toss pollen in front of fan and Poof you have seeds.

The poof method isnt far from a method described in "Breeding Field Crops."
It isnt always possible or effecient to keep track of every parent. At least with this method you can track the mothers and be sure to get every father represented with every mother. Cuzin Dave would be proud.

For better tracking purposes, seems like this method would be more effective to use only one type of pollen.Peace GS

Good call on that GS.
Buckwheat (hope he don't mind my saying so) always uses one type of pollen with his poof method. When he does a grow generally he uses one male or males from one strain to 'inseminate" the various other strains in his garden.
In one set of crosses he kept a CLBx1 male for several generations. I was fortunate enough (and stupid enough) to grow out (and not keep a mom)
some f2s that were excellent.
he did the same with an AK47/A11 male and made some killer sat crosses before that!
His current project promises the same "fun" results. Whoever says polyhybrids are bad hasn't grown any of Buckwheats.

Yes, which may come in handy for recreating more of some particular seed. It could be with only one male, It could be with only males of one particular variety, or if your really crazy about losing track of everything you could use multiple varieties of males but I don't think many folks would be willing to lose complete track of that one elite keepers heritage.
I would go as far as using pollen from many males of one variety. It disapoints me that some well known breeders eliminate all but one male for "ease" of tracking their work. Seems to me that your potentially eliminating half of the alleles in the variety. For the sake of the preservation of genetic diversity I'd rather use the pollen of 200 males and not know which seed was from which father than use only one male.
Cuzin Dave frequently points out the problem with this strategy when he discusses Ne, aka effective breeding population.
Polyhybrids can be a great place to start an IBL project.
Good thread.

Thx....I was being "Tongue & Cheek" about the whole poof thing but yes I'll normally take pollen from multiple males, if I have more than one that has desirerable traits,(same strain)mix the pollen and use it on different females.
Right now I have 3 Dog X OG males, two look excattly the same and one is way shorter and stouter. I mixed the pollen from all 3 and used it on some selected females I have right now...none of the girls are Dog x OG cause I didn't get any. All the males are being kept for a couple more grows and will be used again on the females of the crosses I just made.
The moms are:
Genius
OG X JackieO
Albert Walker
Blackberry
JackieO X Blackberry Widow
Ortega
Sweet Skunk
Swt/C99 X Swt
All of them except the JO X BBW and OG X JO are from clone. Plenty of diversity to pick from and I'm sure each cross is capable of producing keepers.

Have fun with those projects BW...
Would you mind sharing how you manage and flower your males without screwing up your crop?
