National Lawyers Guild Calls for the Impeachment of South Dakota Governor Michael Rounds for Signing Anti-Abortion Legislation

WASHINGTON - March 8 - The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) calls for the impeachment of South Dakota Governor Michael Rounds for signing a bill that would effectively outlaw abortion in South Dakota. The Governor and proponents of the law have openly declared that the law is intended as “a direct frontal assault” to Roe v. Wade. The NLG opposes this unconstitutional action by Governor Rounds. We call for his immediate impeachment and for the law not to be implemented.

The South Dakota law violates a woman’s clearly established right to abortion and self -determination, articulated decades ago by the Supreme Court. The law makes it a felony for health providers to perform abortions, even in cases of rape or incest, unless a women’s life is in jeopardy. Approximately 800 women per year obtain abortions in the state. This law attempts to prohibit women from exercising their ability to control their lives and make a decision about if, when, and under what circumstances to have a child. Instead, women will be forced to travel, take off work and school, and spend extraordinary amounts of money in seeking out-of-state abortion providers. No woman in the U.S. should be subject to those conditions.

NLG President Michael Avery said, "The legislators and the governor of South Dakota have violated their oath of office to uphold the Constitution. Local officials are obliged to follow the law as declared by the Supreme Court and are not entitled to repeatedly violate the law in the hope that the Court may change its rulings."

With the appointment of conservative Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Court, the South Dakota Governor hopes to force a legal battle to challenge Roe. v. Wade. Legislatures in at least ten other states are considering abortion bans. In Mississippi, the House passed a ban last week and the governor has said he will sign it into law. The Guild denounces these assaults on women’s rights.

“It’s long past the time for the states to end their campaigns of trying to restrict a women’s right to choose and attempt to make decisions for us. Women need more publicly funded services such as abortion, contraception, parental leave and child care, not less,” according to NLG Anti-Sexism Committee co-chairs, Andrea Costello and Kerry McLean.

The National Lawyers Guild is a bar association founded in 1937 and comprising over 6,000 members and activists in the service of the people. Its national office is headquartered in New York and it has chapters in nearly every state, as well as over 100 law school chapters.

personally I think the SD governor is a bonehead.

but the NLG isn't all that powerful of an organization, not near so as some others. to give you an idea........ NLG has approximately 6,000 members.. do you have any idea how much of an insignificant drop in the bucket that is in relation to how many members the ABA has..?

I don't mean to crap on their goals here, I just wanted to clear up the misconception regarding their power or influence.

Correct me if I am wrong Batman but isn't 6,000 lawyers united on one goal a scary concept. Scares the F8ck outta me :D
Not to mention the Amicus briefs that would be submitted by outstanding legal minds and organizations outside of the shere of the NLG.
An assault from so many fronts is going to be difficult for the GOP to weather in this obvious illegal wiretapping scenario.
The cretinous actions of members of Congress such a lindsey Grahmn and Bill Frist are going to some back to haunt them.

I wish Calvera were here to tell us how many minutes it would take for Dick Cheney to shoot all 6,000 of them in the face.

LMFAO~....

Kendo.... yea, if all 6k were standing united, it could cause problems for their intended target, but because the organization is standing on one side of an issue, only means that the majority of the voting members decided to take this stance. But for all intents and purposes, yes they are standing 6k strong on this issue.

I agree with them and anyone else for that matter, regarding the baffoonery thats taking place in SD.

IMO, speaking as a father, I would rather see options other than abortion taking place, but that's a father of 2 beautiful girls speaking.

Speaking from a common sense and human rights standpoint however, it think it's a fukin crime for these people to try to strike "while the iron is hot", because of the recent appointments to the SCOTUS. so that they can basically outlaw abortions, their back door tactics should be more than just a crime against man, but all humanity.

The governor of SD and his supporters should be sickened by his actions, strategy and hgis ultimate goal. fuk him and the horse he rode in on.

That's all this grandstanding by SD really is - I'd be surprised if their case even gets the votes necessary for the SCOTUS to hear the argument, let alone for them to rule on it; even if they did, there's still 5 justices firmly on the side of the existing interpretation, so I doubt it would get overturned.

I wish I was as certain about the "firmly" part of your post. Or I guess I should say, I hope you're right bro, I really do.

That's why I was actually in favor of Harriet Meirs. Women seem to age into a more sensible, compassionate human being.

In a way “they” have the right to tell us what we can legally or not legally do with our bodies, can’t they. Legally you cannot sell your body for sex (in most areas), you cannot put illegal drugs into your body without breaking the law and in some places suicide is against the law, which makes me laugh when I think about it.

A very smart man observed last night that "we need more parents, not more kids."

Truer words were never spoken.

Wait until the folks in South Dakota start getting the bills to take care of all the crack babies, meth babies, retarded babies, disabled babies, abused babies, abandoned babies...oh, and let's not forget the flat out unwanted babies!

In this country it's all about the money as we all know. Wait until the S.D. tax money starts going to all the programs they'll need for all those babies, and all other social programs suffer. Won't be long 'til someone changes THAT law.

Ed

P.S. What does Mr. Rounds know about getting pregnant, being pregnant, giving birth and raising a child? NOTHING!! So why is he so threatened by legal abortions?

I get a kick out of the impeachment thing. What ever happened to just letting things be struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, like the law in question will most certainly be? Impeaching the moron won’t affect the law. The nation is impeachment mad these days. What, they farted in public? IMPEACH THEM!!! That’s about as bad as it’s gotten.

To quote a song that came out a couple of years ago, it's only against the law if you do a crappy job of it...
